Creating a Segment

This article covers creating a segment: the basic details, choosing a type, and (for static segments) selecting members. Dynamic filters have their own article.

Start creating

Go to Users → Segments and click Create New Segment. The form opens.

Segments page with list of segments and create new segment button.

Basic details

  • Segment Name (required): up to 50 characters. It cannot be blank.
  • Description (optional): up to 250 characters.

Choose a type

Select the Segment Type:

Create Segment page with Dynamic option highlighted for segment type.
  • Dynamic: membership is defined by filter rules and updates automatically.
  • Static: you pick the members yourself.

The type cannot be changed after the segment is created. The type option is disabled when editing, so choose correctly now. To switch, create a new segment.

Dynamic segments

If you chose Dynamic, you define filter rules that decide who belongs. A live count on the right shows how many learners match (refresh to update). Building these filters is covered in detail in Dynamic Segment Filters.

Static segments

If you chose Static, choose how to add members:

  • Select learners manually: click Select Learners to open the picker and choose learners. A count shows how many you have selected.

Create Segment page with options to name, describe, and select segment type and learners.
  • Upload file: upload a CSV of learners. Download the Sample File for the correct format, fill it in, and upload.

Create Segment dialog with options for segment type and file upload.

For CSV uploads, include only learners already registered on the platform. If the file has errors, an error CSV is provided so you can fix and re-upload.

Save

Click Save Segment (or Update Segment when editing).

Validation to expect:

  • A static segment needs at least one learner selected, or a file uploaded.
  • A dynamic segment needs at least one filter.

Editing a segment

Open a segment and choose Edit. You can change the name, description, members (static), and filters (dynamic). You cannot change the type.

Update Segment dialog with segment details and learner selection options.

What's next

For dynamic segments, continue to Dynamic Segment Filters. Otherwise, see Viewing & Using Segments.
