Introduction to Segments
A segment is a saved group of learners you can reuse across the platform: for a campaign audience, a workflow trigger, a survey, and more. This article explains the two types of segment and what you need before using them.
Where segments live
Segments sit under Users → Segments in the left-hand menu.

Static vs dynamic segments
There are two kinds:
- Dynamic: learners are auto-grouped by live filters (such as course, batch, or progress). Membership stays up to date on its own; no manual maintenance.
- Static: you choose learners yourself, by selecting them or uploading a CSV. The group stays fixed unless you edit it.
Choose the type based on whether the group changes over time. Use dynamic for "everyone who matches a rule" (for example, learners who haven't purchased). Use static for a fixed, hand-picked list.
Where segments are used
Once created, a segment can be reused as an audience in:
- Campaigns: send a broadcast to a segment.
- Workflows: trigger an automation for a segment.
- Feedback surveys: target a survey to a segment.
- Other targeting features across the platform.
Building a segment once and reusing it keeps your targeting consistent.
Before you can use segments
[!Important] Segments is a Power-plan feature. It is available from the Power plan and above. On lower plans you will see an upgrade prompt, and there is a limit on how many segments you can create.
What you cannot do
To set expectations up front:
Segments cannot be deleted or duplicated from the interface, and there is no archive. You can create, view, and edit segments. Also, a segment's type (static or dynamic) is fixed once created and cannot be switched later.
Permissions
- View segments and members: segments read access.
- Create, edit, and export: segments write access.
Admins have full access. The Create button and CSV export are hidden without write access.
