Reusing Modules Across Courses
The point of the Module Library is reuse. This article explains the two ways content moves into courses, how they differ, and what happens when you later change or delete the original.
Two ways to reuse
Use from another course (module level)
When adding a module inside a course, you can pull in an existing module instead of building one:
- In a course's Modules tab, click Add Module.
- Choose Use from another course ("Use a pre-existing module from another course").
- Select the module(s) you want and confirm.
This attaches an existing module to the course.
Clone a section or material
Inside the module builder, you can copy content from your existing library:
- Clone Section: use Add Section by Cloning to copy a whole section.
- Clone a material: when adding a material, choose Clone from existing library.
The clone picker works as a set of cascading choices: pick the source module, then the section, then the specific materials and exercises to copy. Selected items appear as removable tags before you confirm.
Clones are copies, not live links
This is the most important thing to understand about reuse:
[!Important] Cloned sections and materials are independent copies. Editing the original later does not update the copies already placed in courses, and deleting the original does not remove those copies.
The platform's About Clones note states it directly: if you used the same video in three courses, deleting the original will not affect those courses, and the video is only permanently removed once it has been removed from every course where it was cloned.
Because clones do not update automatically, perfect a module before you clone it widely. If you improve a module later, you will need to re-clone or update each course that uses the older copy.
Removing a module from a course
To take a module out of a course (without deleting it from the library):
- Open the course's Modules tab.
- On the module's row, choose Remove.
This detaches the module from that course. It does not delete the module from the library.
