Introduction to Module Library
The Module Library is a central place to build and store reusable modules, the same building blocks you use inside courses, so you can create content once and use it across many courses. This article explains the concept and how reuse works before you start.
Where the Module Library lives
It sits under Learning → Module Library in the left-hand menu.
What a module is
A module is a self-contained unit of content, structured exactly like a module inside a course:
- Module: the reusable unit.
- Section: a group of content within the module.
- Material: an individual item such as a video, PDF, quiz, or assignment.
So the structure is Module → Section → Material, identical to how course content is organized. In fact, building a module here uses the same builder as the Courses Modules tab, so if you have built course content, this will feel familiar.
Why use the Module Library
- Build once, use everywhere: create a strong module and add it to many courses.
- Consistency: reuse the same well-made content instead of rebuilding it per course.
- A single home: keep your reusable teaching units in one place.
How reuse works: linking vs cloning
There are two ways a module or its content ends up in a course, and they behave differently:
- Use from another course (module level): attach an existing module to a course.
- Clone (section or material level): make an independent copy of a section or material into a course.
[!Important] Cloned content is a copy, not a live link. Editing or deleting the original does not automatically change the copies already placed in courses. As the platform's "About Clones" note explains: if you used the same video in three courses, deleting the original will not affect those courses, and the video is only fully removed once it is gone from every course that uses it.
Module Library vs Asset Library
These are different features:
- Module Library: reusable modules (sections, materials, quizzes, and assignments) that plug into courses.
- Asset Library: a store of individual media assets (files) you can pull into content.
This collection covers the Module Library.
Permissions
Module Library is permission-gated (no dedicated plan requirement):
- View: curriculum manage-read access.
- Create: curriculum create-write access.
- Edit: curriculum manage-write access.
- Delete: curriculum manage-delete access.
Admins and instructors have broad access. Buttons hide when you lack the relevant permission.
