Community Settings & Permissions

Each community has a settings screen where you control its address, layout, who can post, engagement options, moderation keywords, and archiving. This article covers it. Open a community and go to its Settings, then Save when done.

Settings page with Reported Messages tab selected.

Basic details and layout

You can update the community's name, description, and image here, plus:

  • Community URL (required): the web address for the community, up to 50 characters. It uses your domain with a communities path. No slashes are allowed, and it must be a valid slug. A copy button is provided.
  • Community Layout: Message or Feed.

For batch-linked communities, the layout is locked to Message and shows a note that a batch-linked community cannot use the Feed layout. The Global Community switch is also hidden for batch-linked communities.

Messaging permissions and moderation

Messaging Permissions controls who can send messages:

  • Only Admins
  • Admins & Community Managers
  • Everyone

When a member is not allowed to post, their message box is replaced by a locked field (for example, "Only Admins Can Send Messages"). Set this to Everyone for an open community, or restrict it for announcement-style spaces.

Engagement options:

  • Allow Reactions: members can react to messages with emojis.
  • Allow Replies: members can reply to a specific message, creating threads.

Community Manager: assign one or more instructors as community managers. Managers can add or remove members, moderate discussions, and post on behalf of the community.

Banned Keywords: enter keywords (comma-separated). Messages containing them are flagged under Reported Messages and are not posted. These are in addition to the platform's built-in list of inappropriate words.

Community Guidelines: the rules shown to members, in rich text.

Archiving a community

At the bottom of settings is a danger zone.

  1. Under Archive Community, click Archive.
  2. Confirm. Archiving hides the community from all learners.

Archiving is the terminal action for a community; there is no hard delete. Archived communities are hidden from learners but remain in your list (filterable, with an "archived" tag).
