Posting, Messaging & Engagement
As an admin, instructor, or community manager, you take part in the community directly. This article covers sending messages and posts, and the engagement features around them.
Message layout vs Feed layout
- In a Message layout community, you type in a chat composer at the bottom and messages appear in a running conversation.
- In a Feed layout community, you use a "What's happening?" composer to create posts that appear in a scrolling feed.
Send a message or post
- Message layout: type your message, attach a file if needed, and send.
- Feed layout: open the composer, write your post (with formatting and attachments), and choose Post.
Both support file attachments.
Notify all learners

When sending, you can tick Notify all learners (in the message composer) so everyone in the community is alerted by email and push notification about that message. Use it for important updates, sparingly, so notifications stay meaningful.
Reactions and replies
If enabled in the community's settings:
- Reactions: hover a message and react with an emoji. Reaction chips show counts, and you can remove your own reaction by clicking it again.
- Replies (threads): reply to a specific message to start a threaded conversation, shown in a side panel.
Reactions and replies appear only if Allow Reactions and Allow Replies are turned on for the community.
Editing, deleting, and reporting
Hover a message for its options:
- Edit and Delete: available on your own messages. Deleting permanently removes the message for everyone and cannot be undone.
- Report: available on others' messages, to flag them to moderators. Reports are anonymous, and you choose a reason (spam, offensive content, harassment, inappropriate language, or other).
When you cannot post
If the community's messaging permission does not allow you to post, the composer is replaced by a locked field explaining who can send (for example, "Only Admins Can Send Messages"). Adjust Messaging Permissions in settings to change who can post.
