Creating a Workflow & Choosing a Trigger

Creating a workflow starts with picking a template, then setting the trigger that decides who enters and when. This article covers both.

Start from a template

  1. Go to Marketing → Workflows and click New Workflow.

Workflows page with a list of workflows and a highlighted 'New Workflow' button.
  2. The Create New Workflow drawer shows starting points:

    • Build your own workflow: a blank canvas.
    • Abandoned Cart Reminders: recover lost sales from learners who left items in their cart.
    • Free preview Upgrades: nudge free-preview learners to purchase.
    • Reengage Dormant Learners: prompt registered learners to enroll in their first course.
  3. Click Try this template on your choice. The workflow builder canvas opens.

The pre-built templates come with a suggested trigger and steps you can adjust; the blank template starts with just a trigger node.

Name your workflow

Use the editable title at the top of the builder to name the workflow. A name is required before you can save.

Configure the trigger

The first node is the Trigger, which decides how learners enter. Open it to Configure Trigger and choose a type:

Configure Trigger dialog with Signal Triggered selected.

Signal Triggered

Learners enter when they perform a specific action.

  1. Choose Signal Triggered.
  2. Select a Trigger Signal (required), the action that starts the workflow.
  3. Optionally select an Exit Signal, an action that removes a learner from the workflow (a "conversion"). The exit list excludes your chosen start signal.

Available signals depend on your account, and commonly include:

  • Signup
  • Course Enrolled
  • Course Free Preview Enrolled
  • Abandoned Cart
  • Checkout Visited
  • Coupon Applied
  • Payment Initiated
  • Payment Successful
  • Product Page Viewed

Set an Exit Signal to stop messaging people who already converted. For a cart-recovery flow, start on "Checkout Visited" (or "Abandoned Cart") and exit on "Course Enrolled" so buyers stop receiving reminders.

Segment Triggered

Learners enter based on membership of a saved segment.

  1. Choose Segment Triggered.
  2. Select a segment. The trigger then shows whether it is a static or dynamic segment, its learner count, and (for dynamic segments) the filters that define it.

What's next

With the trigger set, build the steps in Building the Flow.
