Designing with the Certificate Builder

The Certificate Builder is a visual canvas where you lay out your certificate, add text and images, and insert dynamic fields that fill in per learner. This article covers it. It applies when your template uses Use Certificate Builder.

Open the builder

In the template form, with Use Certificate Builder selected, save your details and click Go to Certificate Builder. The builder opens on a certificate-sized canvas.

The tools

A tool rail gives you:

  • Selection: select and move elements already on the canvas.
  • Text: add text elements and dynamic fields.
  • Background: set a background image.
  • Resize: set the orientation.

A Snap to grid toggle helps align elements neatly as you drag.

Adding text and dynamic fields

Open the Text panel to add text. You can add:

  • Custom Text: free text you type.
  • Dynamic fields (merge tags): values that fill in automatically for each learner, grouped as:
    • Learner Information: Learner Name, Registration number.
    • Certificate Information: Certificate No., Date of Issue, Course name, Start date, End date.
    • Marks and Grading: Certificate Marks, Certificate Total Marks, Certificate Grade.
    • Custom Fields: any custom fields on the template.

Search the panel (for example, type "Course name") to find a field quickly, then add it to the canvas.

Dynamic fields show as placeholders like %learner_name% in the builder and are replaced with each learner's real data when the certificate is issued.

Styling text

Select a text element to open its inspector, where you can set:

Certificate Builder with text element being edited.
  • Content: the text itself.
  • Alignment: horizontal and vertical position.
  • Font family, Font color, Font size, and Text align.
  • Opacity.
  • Delete Text to remove the element.

Images and background

  • Use the image options to upload an image element (PNG or JPG, up to 2MB), then align it and set its opacity. Use Replace or Remove to change it.
  • Use Background to upload a background image for the whole certificate.

Orientation

Use Resize to set the Orientation to Portrait or Landscape.

Preview and save

  • Preview opens the certificate in a new tab with sample data so you can check the layout.
  • Save stores the design. If you go back without saving, you are asked whether to Discard and go back or Save and go back.

Saving the builder does not check for empty content, so preview before you rely on it. Also note the preset/blank template gallery is not currently offered; new certificates start from a blank canvas.

Placeholders reference

For the full list of dynamic fields and the exact values they return, open View Placeholder from the template form. You can click any placeholder to copy it.

What's next

To issue automatically on completion, see Automating Certificates & Notifications, or to issue manually see Issuing Certificates.
