Introduction to Submissions

Submissions is where you review and grade what learners turn in: assignments, quizzes, online exercises, and programming assignments. This article explains what it covers and the key concepts before you start grading.

Where submissions live

Submissions sit under Learning → Submissions in the left-hand menu.

Submissions page with ungraded learner entries and filter options.

Submissions is a gated module. If it is not included in your plan, you will see an upgrade prompt in place of the screen.

What you can review here

Learners submit work against the assessments in your courses. Submissions brings all of that into one list to review and grade. The review experience depends on the assessment type:

  • Assignments: file-and-comment submissions, reviewed in a dedicated assignment screen where you view the file, leave feedback, and award a mark.
  • Quizzes / Tests, Online exercises, and Programming assignments: reviewed in the marking system, which shows auto-scored answers question by question and lets you adjust marks.

Some older assessment types (such as Mettl, assignment-based, custom link, and the legacy programming assessment) open in the previous portal to review. The newer types listed above are reviewed directly in this version.

Evaluation status

Every submission is in one of two states:

  • Not Evaluated: submitted but not yet graded (this is your to-do list).
  • Evaluated: graded.

There is no separate draft or "published grade" step: marking a submission Evaluated is what finalizes it.

[!Important] Grades lock once a submission is evaluated. To change a mark, you first set the submission back to Not Evaluated, edit, then evaluate again. This is covered in the grading articles.

Timeliness and pass/fail

  • Submissions show whether they arrived On Time or Late.
  • Graded work shows Pass or Fail against the assessment's criteria, and a grade if your grading system is enabled.

Who can grade

Submissions is used by admins and instructors:

  • View submissions: submission read access.
  • Review and grade: submission write access.
  • Export: submission export access.

Admins and instructors have access; some columns (such as contact details) may be hidden for instructors depending on your settings.
