Question Bank Settings: Random or Manual

Linking a bank to a section makes all of its questions available. Question Bank Settings is where you decide how many of them are actually used, and whether the platform picks them or you do.

Open the settings

In the exercise, find the linked bank inside its section and click Question Bank Settings. A window opens with the same title and an Update Settings button.

Choose how questions are picked

The first control is How to choose questions? with two options.

Automatically (Random)

The platform pulls a random subset of the bank for each attempt.

Set No. of questions to be used from the dropdown. The options are Use all, or any number from 0 up to the total in the bank.

Random selection is the reason to build banks larger than the paper you need. A bank of 50 questions pulling 10 at random means two learners sitting side by side rarely see the same paper, and the same exercise can be reused across batches.

Manually

You choose the exact questions. A table lists every question in the bank with a Select checkbox, a Sr. No., and the question text. Tick the ones you want and the count appears next to the option.

Sub-questions do not get their own checkbox. Selecting a parent question brings its sub-questions with it.

Click Update Settings to save. You will see "Question bank settings updated successfully".

If you choose Manually without ticking anything, you will see "Please select questions".

What the section then shows

Under the linked bank you will see one of:

  • "Using {n} out of {total} questions" when set to use all
  • "Automatically selecting {n} out of {total} questions" for a random pull
  • "Manually selecting {n} out of {total} questions" for a manual selection

For a random pull the specific questions are not listed, because they are decided when a learner starts the attempt.

Mixing settings across banks

Settings are per linked bank, not per section. A single section can combine an Easy bank pulling 5 at random, a Medium bank pulling 3, and a Hard bank with 2 questions chosen by hand. That is how you control the shape of a paper.

[!Important] There is no way to filter a random pull by difficulty or topic within a bank. Segment by creating separate banks and linking several into the same section.

If the bank changes later

Because the link is live, the numbers shift with the bank:

  • Random: adding questions to the bank enlarges the pool the pull draws from. Your chosen count stays the same.
  • Manual: if a question you selected is deleted from the bank, it disappears from the paper. Re-open the settings and reselect after any bulk edit of a bank.
