Introduction to Batches
A batch is a group of learners enrolled in a course together, with their own instructors, schedule, sessions, and community. Batches are how you actually run a course, whether that is a live cohort with weekly classes or a self-paced group you track and certify. This article explains the essentials before you create one.
Where batches live
Batches live under Learning → Batches in the left-hand menu. You can also see and create batches for a specific course from that course's Batches tab under Products → Courses.

How batches relate to courses
Every batch belongs to a course. The course defines the content and pricing; the batch defines who is learning it, when, and with whom. This separation is powerful:
- One course can run many batches (for example, a new intake every month).
- Different batches of the same course can be assigned a different set of modules, so you can tailor the learning journey per group.
- Instructors, sessions, attendance, and progress are all tracked per batch.
You must publish a course to a branch (from its Pricing and Publishing tab) before you can create a batch for it. If the Create Batch option is unavailable, publish the course first.
Batch status
Batches move through these states, which you can filter by on the batch list:
- Active: currently running or upcoming.
- Completed: the batch's run has ended and its learners are marked completed.
- Archived: retired batches, kept for records.
- All: every batch regardless of state.
The default batch
Each course can have one default batch. Any online admissions (self-service enrollments) for that course flow into the default batch automatically. You can change which batch is the default at any time.
The default batch cannot be archived. To archive it, first mark another batch as default.
What you can do with a batch
Once a batch exists, you manage it from its classroom view, which includes:
- Learners: who is enrolled.
- Sessions: scheduled and past classes, with sign-in, recordings, and attendance.
- Attendance Report and Content / Assessment Progress: tracking and reporting.
- Batch Actions: add learners, add an extra class, and open the schedule.
- An optional Batch Community for discussion.
Certificates for a batch's learners are issued through the separate Certificates area, covered later in this collection.
