Adding Content: Materials & Content Types

Materials are the individual pieces of content inside a section: videos, documents, quizzes, assignments, and more. This article covers the content types available and the settings you can apply to each.

Add a material

  1. Go to Products → Courses, open your course, and select the Modules tab.

Modules section of the Wolf Degree Course with two listed modules.
  2. Open the module and section where the content belongs.

Module content view with sections, reached by opening a module on the course's Modules tab
  3. Add a new material. You will be asked to Select material type, or you can Clone from existing library to reuse content you have already uploaded.

Add Material dialog with material type options and highlighted clone option.
  4. Choose a type (see the list below), add the content, configure its settings, and save.

Add Material dialog with Video option highlighted.

Reuse saves time. If you have already uploaded a file to your Asset Library, choose Clone from existing library instead of uploading again.

Content types

Edmingle supports a wide range of material types:

  • Video: hosted video with support for subtitles, audio tracks, and DRM protection.
  • Audio: audio files.
  • PDF: documents, with optional watermarking (including custom watermark text).
  • Youtube: embed a YouTube video.
  • Image: image files.
  • Doc: document files.
  • Sheet: spreadsheet files.
  • Slide: slide decks.
  • Text/HTML: write directly in the editor or upload a file.
  • Zip: zipped file bundles.
  • SCORM Zip: SCORM packages for standards-based e-learning content.
  • Link/Embed: link to or embed an external URL.
  • Exercise: a quiz.
  • Assignment: a task learners submit.
  • Programming Assignment: a coding assignment.
  • Form: a form or feedback form.
  • Epub: EPUB e-books.

The exact set of available types can depend on your plan. If you do not see a type listed here, it may not be enabled for your account.

Per-material settings

When you add a material, you can configure options such as:

  • Name and an optional rich-text description.
  • Maximum views: cap how many times a learner can open the material.
  • Set as Prerequisite: learners must complete this material before proceeding.
  • Enable Downloads: allow learners to download the file.
  • Enable DRM Protection: protect video and other content from unauthorized copying.
  • Allow access on: choose Both (web and app) or App only.

Availability of these options varies by content type (for example, DRM and downloads apply to video and file types).

Free preview content

You can mark specific materials as free preview content so prospective learners can sample the course before buying. The Enable free preview option is set on the course's Pricing and Publishing tab; materials flagged as preview then become accessible without enrollment.

Suggested workflow

  1. Add materials to each section in the order learners should follow.
  2. Set prerequisites only where sequence truly matters.
  3. Turn on DRM and disable downloads for premium video you want to protect.
  4. Mark one or two strong materials as free preview to help conversions.

What's next

With content in place, configure the course itself in Course Details & Completion Settings.
